State GOP To Consider Backing Electoral College Measure

Title and summary expected today from AG's office
When the California Republican Party gathers for its semi-annual convention in Indian Wells this weekend, it will consider officially backing a controversial initiative to allocate the state's Electoral College votes by congressional district, the party chairman said.
...
"We've received a request and there's been a great deal of interest among our members who want to see every vote count," party chairman Ron Nehring told Capitol Alert.
Nehring called a potential endorsement a "significant step" and that the party could provide money or help gather signatures to qualify the measure.
"It opens the door to that on a number of different levels," he said.
The initiative is expected to receive a title and summary today from the Attorney General's Office, and U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean have scheduled to teleconference to criticize the measure as a GOP power grab.
Nehring said the move for the California GOP to back the initiative before it has even qualified - or even reported a campaign contribution - was driven, in part by "the hyperventilating on the part of the Democrats."
...
But Nehring said the Republican Party backing the measure would be consistent with its own GOP primary, where in 2008 the nominating delegates will be selected by congressional district, not the winner of the popular vote.
"Cynical ploy orchestrated by the blah blah blah," said Nehring. "The vitriol and overreaction from the Democrats caught a lot of people's attention from the party."
