DEAN ANDAL LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO RECLAIM POMBO SEAT FOR REPUBLICANS
10/1/2007
Local businessman Dean Andal, a Republican who served in the State Assembly and on the California Board of Equalization, has announced that he will challenge first-term Democratic Congressman Jerry McNerney in California’s sprawling 11th Congressional District. The district reaches from Stockton in the east to Danville in the west, and includes portions of San Joaquin, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Alameda Counties.
“This election is about restoring trust in Congress and holding it accountable for its treatment of American taxpayers,” said Andal, noting that one of McNerney’s first acts after being elected to Congress was “to vote in support of a $400 billion tax increase—the largest federal tax hike in history.”
“For all the talk and promises, Congress continues to abuse our money and betray our trust,” said Andal, an Eagle Scout who earned high honors for ethics and personal integrity when he served in the California State Assembly from 1991 to 1994. “I want to help rebuild trust and put Congress on a new path.”
As an Assemblyman, Andal never voted to raise taxes or his legislative salary, and routinely returned up to 30 percent of his office budget to the state treasury each term. As a member of the Board of Equalization, his efforts to increase efficiency, streamline operations and improve service saved California taxpayers over $40 million.
“When it comes to improving government service and saving tax dollars, I haven’t just talked the talk, I’ve walked the walk,” said Andal, who was named “Legislator of the Year” by the state’s leading tax reform groups and earned a “Friend of the Taxpayers Award” from the California Taxpayers Association. Andal said his campaign would also focus on the need to defend against crime and international terrorism.
“This is a dangerous world,” said Andal. “We need to remain strong and vigilant, without retreating from the world stage or abandoning our place in the global economy.” Andal was co-chair of the tax policy group on Governor Schwarzenegger’s transition team. He served on the San Joaquin Child Abuse Prevention Council and was a member of the Employer Support Council for the U.S. National Guard. He served as a trustee for the San Joaquin County Board of Education, and is now a trustee for the Lincoln Unified School District.
